KUALA LUMPUR June 15 - Some 140,000 personnel of the Malaysian Armed Forces are expected to get an adjusted salary and allowance this year.
Armed Forces Chief General Tan Sri Mohd Zahidi Zainuddin said the new pay would involve all personnel of the three forces, namely the air force, the navy and the army.
"Yesterday, we discussed our study relating the salary adjustment with the Public Service Department (PSD) and in principle, they have agreed to the adjustment.
"The PSD will inform to us their decision in the near term or another one or two months or before the armed forces celebration day in September," he told reporters after opening Setia Bakti Kemas Kindergarten at the Desa Tun Hussein Onn Camp, here on Tuesday.
Members of the Royal Malaysian Police were given an adjusted pay last year with the government approving a basic salary increase of the force to RM804 in line with the Sistem Saraan Malaysia.
Zahidi said the new pay would be announced by Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Najib Tun Razak who is also Defence Minister.
He said under the new salary scheme, the minimum qualification required to join the armed forces would be raised to Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) from Sijil Rendah Pelajaran now.
So, the basic pay under the new scheme would be based on the SPM qualification.
The armed forces are now offering a salary of RM578.86 and a fixed armed forces service allowance of RM65 to a new recruit.
The salary of a new cadet officer with a degree or diploma is RM751.50 in the first year and it will be increased up to RM1.071 in the fifth year. They are also paid an allowance of RM80.
