Title: ranks

cavsg - June 16, 2004 01:13 PM (GMT)
the board can create ranks based on the number of posts. I created the following
Recruit 0 posts
Corporal 10 posts
Sergeant 100 posts
Staff Sergeant 500 posts
Warrant Officer 1000 posts

Why not have the full rank structure? Now you're missing the PTE, PFC, LCP.

I saw a forum which actuallly has the rank in piture form instead of words, I feel that it will be much more better.

For example like the rank of Sgt >>>, & general ** etc.

I was trying to look for SAF rank stucture pictures in gif or ico but I can't find it, if anyone here has the graphic files of SAF stucture , maybe cavsg coud incorporate it into this forum. ;)

gary1910 - June 23, 2004 05:27 PM (GMT)
Just found it from Mindef website.

Cavsg , maybe u could copy and edit the various ranks .

Army ranks

How do you guys feel abt the ranks graphic?
I think it is better that just words. B)

I like to suggest the following:

Recruit 0 posts
Private Not use, but some think it should be in.
Lance Corporal Not use, but some think it should be in.
Corporal 10 posts
3rd Sergeant 50 posts
2nd Sergeant 100 posts
1st Sergeant 200 posts
Staff Sergeant 300 posts
Master Sergeant 400 posts
Warrant Officer Class 2 500 posts
Warrant Officer Class 1 600 posts
Master Warrant Officer 800 posts
Senior Warrant Officer 900 posts

2nd Lieutenant 1000 posts
Lieutenant 2000 posts
Captain 5000 posts
Major 10000 posts
Lieutenant Colonel 20000 posts
Colonel 30000 posts
Brigadier-General ? posts
Major-General ? posts
Lieutenant-General ? posts
General ? posts
Field Marshal ? posts

The General ranks maybe exclusively for Mods and Admin?
And for those who feel that the rank of Pte and LCP should be incorporated then maybe :

Private 5-10 posts
Lance Corporal 20 posts
Corporal 30 posts

Hehe, some of you guys may get demoted to "chow" Pte or ikan bilis ! :D

cavsg - June 24, 2004 11:04 AM (GMT)
this is what I have set. I can change , but I would like to hear from the rest of the mods as well.

Recruit 0 posts
Corporal 10 posts
3rd Sergeant 50 posts
2nd Sergeant 100 posts
1st Sergeant 200 posts
Staff Sergeant 300 posts
Master Sergeant 400 posts
Warrant Officer Class 2 500 posts

2nd Lieutenant 600 posts
Lieutenant 700 posts
Captain 1000 posts
Major 2000 posts
Lieutenant Colonel 3000 posts
Colonel 4000 posts
Brigadier-General 5000 posts

I think 5000 post max limit is a bit low , in sgforum, there are many members there who have more than 10,000 posts, for example icefire has more than 31,000 post!

I dun expect this forum will have such high rate of posting since the discussion scope is not as wide as in sgforum, maybe the max limit to be abt 20-30k, so to let ppl have many high targets to achieve. B)

My revised ranking for officers:

2nd Lieutenant 1000 posts
Lieutenant 2000 posts
Captain 3000 posts
Major 5000 posts
Lieutenant Colonel 7000 posts
Colonel 10000 posts
Brigadier-General 15000 posts
Major-General 20000 posts
Lieutenant-General ? posts
General ? posts
Field Marshal ? posts

Btw cavsg, is there a limit to the number of rankings?

cavsg - June 24, 2004 02:31 PM (GMT)
there is no limit but i think we don't have to rush into giving such high ranks yet as most people have not cross 3SGT yet except me. When the time comes we will add the ranks. its only a 5 min job.

True, at the moment it is not neccessary for high ranking.

I wanted to ask why you skipped Pte, LCP and most Warrant officer ranks?
Maybe you wanted to set the forum own identity?

Another thing that I am concern, I dunno whether we will get into trouble in using SAF designed ranks exactly without any modification. :(

Maybe we should have our very own rank design by editing those from SAF, for example the CPL rank w/o the "roof"( the old design which almost universal in many armies), those ranks with SG crest or Coat of Arms for example SSG,Major etc could be modify with our own "crest" so not to get into trouble with Mindef.

And those ranks are worn on the epaulettes which has the word "Singapore" should be blanked out or replaced with another word .

I think those ranks without the SG crest or the word "Singapore" should be ok.

Comments any1??

Another thing ,anonymous guest could post in the forum, is it the setting you guys want?

cavsg - June 25, 2004 02:05 AM (GMT)
relac, no need to be so strict and follow all the ranks in SAF rite. We are just here to chit chat and have fun.

sgboy2004 - June 27, 2004 10:10 AM (GMT)
mi think it is ok to use lah...

Obersturmfuhrer - July 4, 2004 07:09 PM (GMT)
I am against such a system. Partly as it is quite demeaning to the holders of the actual rank. Specialists, WOs and Officers all go thru some manner of shit to get their titles but using this system, the talkative ones get to be a General? <_<

Such a system will only encourage the proliferation of many unconstructive and useless postings as some individuals try to chalk up their posts to gain such "promotions". I have witnessed many such incidents in other forums with such a system, with individual threads slowly turning into personal chats and many of them going so off-topic that the headings eventually do not reflect the actual discussion taking place.

It may be good to "reward" the users with something but a user should only contribute to a discussion if he/she has a genuine interest in the subject but I personally feel that such a rank system is not neccessary.

All those ranking dun mean nothing outside this forum, and even is this forum , it only mean the number of postings that's all ,nothing more! So relac lah B)

For eg NCC officers, when they join SAF, they still started at recruit right!!!
Military Nuts" Generals has no bearing to the Generals in SAF.
Even my place has some Stars officers, those security guards have a few stars on their shoulder!!! :D

Well, it is one way to encourage participation.
Of course chatting for one or two posts should be ok,but certainly no "hijacking" of thread.

Sometime a thread will get diverted to a related issue, which is quite normal but of course not things like "hv you eaten?" stuff and become your own private chat.

Maybe one suggestion, for other rank, members will be "promoted" by numbers of postings, but to be promoted further to officer ranks, maybe a point system where other members will vote on the postings.

For example if more than 5 & above good votes, one will gain a point. Likewise 5 bad votes , one will get deduct a point.

The point system will start at your very first post but one will not get promote to officer ranks, he should achieve the minimum number of posts say 600 posts( must be above Warrant officer) then he will be promoted based on his accumulated points, for eg for 2nd Lta 20 pts, Lta 50 pts, Cpt 100 pts etc.

Of course the point system is good if no one start to collude with eachother but there is also some check and balance, if you think it is not a good post, vote it as bad where it will counter the good votes.

I noe it is abit chim, maybe even impractical, just a suggestion. :ph43r:
cavsg, you could treat it as nonsense. :P

I'm more concerned about the quality of posts with this system. I'm willing to just sit back and observe how the system goes.

need ISO 9000 or not ah?

Obersturmfuhrer - July 6, 2004 05:54 PM (GMT)
Of course not. :D

Previous bad experience with similar system. Members end up digressing from main topic, posting one liners, chit-chating, etc, just to chalk up their posts.

IceStorm - July 7, 2004 11:02 AM (GMT)
