I am just helping out.

The one who help to start this is cavsg but nowadays he is kind of MIA.

And this is so far a free fourm as far as I known, that is why some features are not available, for example the forum search engine dun work , which cavsg has resorted to to use 3rd party search engines for this forum.

But the problem with 3rd party search engines, it is only useful up to 1000 topics. so currently , they could only search for the older topics as in the "General Discussion" subforum has already exceed that , that is why we encouraged less sismilar thread to be created and non miliatry stuff to be in the "Coffeshop" subforum.

A simple visual challenge-response authentication (CAPTCHA) might have solved this problem. Problem is the "security code feature" provided by invisionfree during the registration process can be easily circumvented by Optical Character Recognition scripts or softwares.

Paid version of Invision Power Board (IPB) and vBulletin does not suffurs from regular cases of automated spam-bot registrations, and invisionfree only activates CAPTCHA when the rate of user registration exceeds a certain limit.

I wrote several PHP-scripts to replace the original CAPTCHA for IPB (Ver. 2.3.5.), not sure if they can be integrated into invisionfree (Ver. 1.3) though (maybe someone love to help?). Otherwise, the only option now is to validate manually till all invisionfree servers are converted to ZetaBoards.

All boards do have a built in CAPTCHA system already, but it only activates when a large number of registrations occur on your board over a short period of time. There is no other way to activate it. We are aware that spambots are an increasing nuisance to boards and their owners.

Our new software, ZetaBoards, includes a number of methods to prevent bots from registering. You can register a ZetaBoard to try it out. We are in the process of beginning conversions to ZetaBoards.

Perhaps, if you guys let those spam bots register automatically at a high enough rate, the "built-in CAPTCHA system" will kick in? Just a joke.

Okie ... bear with me for a minut (semi-internet savvy):

I did a whois and apparently the domain militarynuts.com is hosted by godaddy.com ...

1) If domain owner has a hosting plan with godaddy, why not use the free software that comes with the hosting plan? Available choices are either SMF, YAF or Vanilla ... all of which (I assume) has better functionality than Invision?

2) If the domain owner does not have a hosting plan then maybe that explains why this forum is using Invision. In that case, can someone advise if SMF or PhPBB will make things better?

IF SMF/phpBB can make things better AND the domain owner is willing to transfer the domain to my name, I can host the forum on my hosting plan which has a choice of either SMF or phpBB for free.

The domain has to be in my name (sorry) as the unlimited domain hosting in my plan require that the domains be in my name ... I don't have a resellers plan that allows me to host any external party's domain.

Discuss ...

Oh BTW, someone will have to help me do all the setup work including partitioning my server directory so that there is no impact on my personal domain space, etc ...

From what i can gussed, this invisionfree forum was created before the domain: militarynuts.com was registered, refer to this thread. "Functionality" would-be in terms of modification or administrative and security features?

Archived threads and posts cannot be migrated to a new SMF or phpBB forum, board have to be configure (time-consuming for our busy mods) and existing members have to re-register. Like what i suggested in mine previous post, we can wait for a conversion to the newer zetaboard.

Screenshot from Admin's control panal.
Perhaps we should have a poll on the conversion to zetaboard?

I think there is function to convert to Zeta board and need the root admin to do it(cavsg).

So what is zeta board like, what is the pros and cons after conversion?

Hi Gary, zetaboard (originally known as invisionfree version. 02) is basically an evolved, improved and updated invisionfree-based forum board. All registered members, existing threads and posts will be migrated to the new board during the conversion process, this includes individual post-counts as well.

Some features includes...
  • Improved and integrated search function (disabled in invisionfree).
  • Improved visual challenge-response authentication (CAPTCHA), spam-bots prevention.
  • Topics / posts can be hidden, and members can ignore postings by regular trolls (can be disabled though).

As a new software release, there are bound to be bugs. No harm creating a free board to test its function and stability before opting for a conversion. I also recommend saving the Cascading Style Sheets (CSS), as banners, skins and themes will not be converted (they can be transferred by the admins though).
