Title: RSAF T-33 trainers

ChineseJunk - December 14, 2008 04:46 AM (GMT)
Republic of Singapore Air Force T-33s.

Kit: Academy 1/48 T-33A Shooting Star (Model #2185/FI017)

Decals were custom made. The 131 Squadron decal on the tail was printed on decal paper from a digital image of the tail fin of the T-33 at the Air Force Museum. The Ying Yang roundels and aircraft numbers were all custom printed based on reference pictures.

I have one unbuilt T-33 and will probably paint it in bare metal as "906". There's also an intriguing T-33 in bare metal with a green nose.

My next project: RSAF F-5s. I have documented at least eight distinct paint schemes and would like to paint one example of each. I also have two RF-5E noses which cost more than the kit itself.

I used an Iwata airbrush. The colour schemes were mixed from Gunze paints.

This one was painted to look like the one at the Air Force Museum. The canopy is loose as I've yet to decide if I want it with the canopy open or closed.

This is the first plane I painted using an airbrush. If I had to do it again, I'd try weathering the camo scheme.

CJ, very nicely done museum quality models here. You should seriously consider participating in local modelling contests like Airfix Cup (18-20 June 2009 Ngee Ann Polytechnic) and Tamiya/M Con, if they decide to stage one in 2009.

This year's Tamiya/M Con Nov. 19-23 (Sculpture Square, Waterloo street), I had a conversation with one of the organising committee members and he said he'd like to see modellers build older RSAF aircraft, and form a sort of RSAF heritage series of scale model planes.

Btw, I don't know why we got rid of all our Short Skyvans. It should be on static display at the Air Force Museum. Perhaps its medium size (65ft X 40ft X 15ft) in the hangar is a problem? There's more than enough space near the main gate where the 'flying' Skyhawk and helicopters are. Oh well.

the skyvans were sold overseas to an australian company for use in PNG when they were decommissioned.
