A female soldier and MP.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
Thanks for taking the time to visit. For most of the 6 years that I have been an MP, I've replied to the often-asked question of what it is I do with the answer "Mother, Soldier, Member of Parliament". However, that's had to change a bit since the Nov 08 election.
For a start, I'm now a Minister outside Cabinet in the National/ACT/Maori Government with three portfolio responsibilities:
* Minister of Consumer Affairs
* Associate Minister of Defence
* Associate Minister of Education
Because of these appointments, I've reluctantly had to transfer to the Non-Active Reserve of the NZ Army. I continue to hold the roles of ACT Deputy Leader and Party Whip. Both jobs have become busier with 3 additional ACT MPs joining us in Parliament.
This site reflects bits from all my 'jobs'. It's not intended to be a politics-only site, although there is plenty of political comment and information (for those so inclined) on what's happening at Parliament and outside. If you have comments or stories about these or other issues please send them to me. Details of how to find me are in the 'Contacts' section.
Most important in my life, though, is my job of wife to Duncan and mother to my five children. Politics is hard on families, and mine puts up with a lot - we're a busy household!
I've had a lot of fun developing my flickr photo gallery and YouTube channel so don't forget to have a look there - just click on the multimedia links to the left to view them. I've also added some links to other sites I like to visit, I thought you might enjoy them as well.
I hope you enjoy my website. Please come back soon as the material is changed and updated regularly. To help you stay up to date, there's an RSS link at bottom right.

She (Heather Roy) is the Associate Defense Minister for NZ, and has also had some training with their regular army and Territorials.
I'm quite curious as to which unit was there for live firing, since we have a few units with that capability.

We'll not discuss it as it falls under OPSEC.

Heh, I thought someone might say that. Note, however, that I wasn't particularly asking which unit, but just curious about it.

This year's thunder warrior involved 21SA, 24SA, 3SIR, 1MI Bn (reported in 90cent newspaper) so the unit firing the spike would have been 3 SIR. Same thing with 7 Gds SIB last year who also did the spike live firing (reported in mindef website).
The interesting news is that this year's thunder warrior was the first to involve a motorised infantry exercise.

Ah, I was wondering if 1MI was involved, as there was the shot of the UAV.
Thanks, I don't really have access to the 90 cent paper here. :)

Noted the official news release from Mindef as well.
http://www.mindef.gov.sg/imindef/news_and_...21jan09_nr.html"Besides artillery training, the SAF is also conducting infantry training, supported by M113 Armoured Personnel Carriers, Primus, weapon-locating radar and mini-unmanned aerial vehicles."

Quite surprised to see the arty guys carrying M16s, thought they would be using SAR-21s.

If it isn't broken...
is there mono-intake for Arty? I can't imagine how a PTE fresh from Tekong and being trained on SAR21 would look when he gets posted to Arty and gets told to 'downgrade' to the M16 :P

Yea, there's mono-intake, but BMTC grads are also sent over.

AFAIK, the BMT trainees will undergo M16 and SAR21 training.
The infantry and guards units are all SAR21.
HTH.
