Kongsberg Norcontrol IT has been awarded a contract with the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) for the future maritime surveillance system that will cover the Singapore Strait and the approaches to Singapore Port. The contract is valued at approximately MNOK 145.

“We are delighted that the MPA has once again recognised Kongsberg Norcontrol IT’s ability to deliver the best solution to ensure the safety and efficiency of shipping in and around Singapore waters. The MPA is world renowned for its capability to manage vessels and has always been at the forefront in accepting and utilizing technology”, says President Inge Flaten. “This award reflects the strength of Kongsberg Norcontrol IT as the leading supplier of maritime domain awareness solutions including Vessel Traffic Service (VTS) systems worldwide.”

Does it cover only surface or both surface and below??

Perhaps a precursor to a local SOSUS net?? It would be great....we are more protected against possible sub intrusions..... furthermore on the civilian side of the picture, it would strengthen our position as amongst the best port in the world.

The VTMIS is normally used for surface vessel tracking but I see no reason why it can't be extended to sub-surface detection cum tracking particularly in the warning system. Afterall, buoys are also used for static sub detection.

Kongsberg has a wide variety of sub-surface hydroacoustic detection and sonar products

Kongsberg is also a leader in diver detection tech. Their white paper on the subject is downloadable from naval tech.

This was an interesting presentation on Singapore port security.

There is also an MOU between SG and Norway on maritime port R&D (check out MPA.gov.sg website).

There's also quite a lot of firms eg sonardyne, reson selling diver detection systems and setting up offices in SG.

Separately, Mindef also colloborated with Stratech on its VIPS which the ISAPS module I think included underwater threat detection.

So it is very likely there is already a sub-surface detection and tracking net in SG.
