Total Defence campaign wants Singaporeans to pledge commitmentBy Dylan Loh, Channel NewsAsia | Posted: 14 January 2010 1915 hrsSINGAPORE : Organisers of this year's Total Defence Day want Singaporeans to make a personal pledge on what they are doing to defend Singapore.
It can be as simple as having fun with your friends, and you will not even realise that you are living the spirit of Total Defence.
Organisers of this year's Total Defence campaign said it's the small things that matter.
"There are so many of us who care so much about the place that we live in, the environment that we are in, that we can contribute to care about it, to make it better and to interact and to make a connection with each other and to create this bond in the community."
Last year, Singaporeans were asked to reflect on what they would defend. This year's campaign wants them to translate those reflections into action.
"I will defend my beloved ones," said one young Singaporean.
"I will help my friends in school with their homework," said another.
You can submit videos and pictures of your pledges online at www.iwill.sg, and the public can vote for the favourite entries to win prizes.

SCDF to sound signal islandwide in support of Total Defence DaySINGAPORE: The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) will sound the "Important Message" signal islandwide on February 15 in support of Total Defence Day.
The exercise will last for a minute.
SCDF said when the Public Warning System (PWS) is sounded, members of the public can immediately tune in to any local radio stations to listen to a special infomercial broadcast.
The PWS is a network of sirens placed at strategic points throughout the island.
The purpose of this system is to warn the public of imminent threats that could endanger lives and property.

nah, actually i was thinking along the lines of,
you know, since we are a military nuts forum and almost all of us here are NSmen or NSFs or NSFs to be, some form of tribute to those who gave their all. maybe like some remembrance column or something like that here online ?
i cant remember where i read this, but i think it was from a US forward operating base in Iraq. a monument to those who fell in combat, it went like this :
"all gave some, some gave all"
kinda appropriate for us.
or maybe we can all chip in to set up some form of award or bursary for those who die while in active service but have kids or something. just a suggestion. something from the grassroots and from the community to give back something.
milnut blood donation drive ? effortless, contributes to civil security and all can go blood bank and do. in the spirit of total defence day.

43rd WAR MEMORIAL SERVICEThe Singapore Chinese Chamber of Commerce & Industry (SCCCI) will hold the 43rd War Memorial Service for the Civilian Victims of the Japanese Occupation at the War Memorial Park, Beach Road.
The details are as follows:Date: February 15, 2010 (Monday, 2nd day of Lunar New Year)
Time: 9.30 am to 10 am (All guests to be seated by 9.15 am)
Venue: War Memorial Park, Beach Road
Guest-of-Honour: RADM(NS) Lui Tuck Yew, Acting Minister for Information, Communications & the Arts
Dress Code: Dark Suit / Shirt & Tie
This annual memorial service is held in remembrance of the victims who were killed during the Japanese Occupation of Singapore. As a major function for the Total Defence Day, it reminds all Singaporeans that we cannot take our peace for granted and have to be able to defend ourselves.
An "All Clear" siren will be sounded by the Singapore Civil Defence Force to kick-start the event.
Representatives from the SCCCI, diplomatic corps, religious organisations, business & clan associations, uniformed services, schools, Singapore Police Force Gurkha Contingent and National Cadet Corps, together with the families of the victims will be attending the Service.

the GOVT should make every officer and specialist in every service, including police and civil defence plus civilian officials make their pledge before such a combined monument.
Alfie007 - February 14, 2010 10:37 AM (GMT)
Interesting, that's a good one.. Thanks IceStorm..
To add on, I think our youths should not be left out in such re-dedication ceremonies as I felt that such sense of patriotism should be inculcated from young.. As a former BMTC instructor, I've seen many enlistees who dread NS & they themselves had personal perceptions that Singapore cannot be defended & the first thing they would do in the event of a crisis, is to run away.. Such re-dedication ceremonies should included youth members from the uniformed groups for a start, namely the National Cadet Corps, National Police Cadet Corps, National Civil Defence Cadet Corps, Singapore Scouts Association, Singapore Girl Guides Association, Boys' Brigade in Singapore, Girls' Brigade in Singapore, St John Ambulance Brigade, the Singapore Red Cross Youth & the Singapore Youth Flying Club..
While the annual SAF Day Combined Re-dedication Ceremonies (every 1st of July) are mainly for those of us in the SAF, a Total Defence Day Re-dedication Ceremony (for every 15th of February) for ALL citizens is most ideal for this (& there should be "live" telecast for all to see)..
About the location of such a combined monument, perhaps Esplanade Park would be a suitable location since there are several other monuments there & it's near the historical City Hall, Padang & the War Memorial Park..
Just my thoughts..

I heard at Tampines New Town..loud & clear..almost jump up coz I forgot they sounding the alarm today.
I agree that peace should not be taken for granted. Looking at history, most countries (Russia, Kuwait) had to fought war because they thought otherwise.
dacis2 - February 16, 2010 10:33 AM (GMT)
I could hear it loud and clear on Orchard Road. Quite surprising, forgot the date.
