Singapore aborts flight show after safety breached

Reuters - Friday, February 5SendIM StoryPrint.SINGAPORE, Feb 4 - Singapore aborted a flight display at its international airshow on Thursday after a South Korean pilot steered his jet too close to spectators, witnesses and the show organiser said.

An aerial display, which was supposed to last for eight minutes, was shortened to less than half that after the error by the T-50 Golden Eagle jet, owned by the Korean Aerospace Industries.

"The T-50 Golden Eagle's flight this afternoon was observed to have infringed the safety boundaries and the pilot was instructed to terminate his flying display as a precaution," Singapore Airshow's Marilyn Ho said in an email to Reuters.

"The Singapore Airshow has strict safety standards for all aerial displays. Proper safety markers and boundaries are in place to ensure the safety of the audience and the pilots." The week-long biennial Singapore Airshow kicked off on the densely populated island-state on Tuesday and is due to open to public this weekend, when thousands of spectators are expected to visit.

Thursday's flight display was watched by hundreds of trade visitors -- many of whom were wowed by the aircraft's proximity as it approached the show centre's seaside grounds, and then made an acute turn back out to sea, a witness told Reuters. "I was surprised at how low the aircraft was flying. First, I thought it was part of the thrill factor, but found it anti-climaxed when I didn't see the jet return, only to realise that the show had ended," said a Singaporean photographer who didn't want to be identified.

in fact me and evo has a feeling the safety was breached in weds show as well....the pilot was very aggressive in his flying....we noticed that the plane was actually over the spectators close to the end of the flying display....

It is going to be a bad publicity stunt!! Or rather bringing the aircraft to its limits!!

yep. pilot of the golden eagle was already very garang on wednesday.

afterburner on all the time. flying quite low at times.

one high loop seemed to cross over our heads as we looked vertically upwards.

hard-sell overdone :)

Trying to demostrate Golden Eagle can do a fighter jet stunt!!

CM06 - February 5, 2010 02:57 AM (GMT)
i doubt our purchasers are impressed by these honestly....maybe they are trying to wow-sell the plane to someone else in the crowd.

it might also mean that dsta is still undecided which trainer to purchase...

Dun worry, other interested aircaft still can fly even lower on public days!! Imagine if the B52 or C17 fly on tree top level right above out heads.

just got back. no T50 and no F-111 :( not sure if the F-111 will fly tomorrow since they have a second aircraft No 138. today really is boring and lots of dark clouds.

the C-130J is on static display.

the golden eagle is really all out to impress, they not only put the red lion head, they also chose the tail number 008  unfortunately they forgot only 007 is licensed to do dangerous stunts and get away with it

on Wednesday I too felt the heat flush during the dump and burn, so did my non-milnut friends.

In 2008 airshow, T 50 Korean trainer was noisy than other 2 trainers.
The engine noise was not so " smooth"---lay man language!

I made an impromptu appearance today afternoon and the booths are nearly empty as many have packed up. I bought myself a ticket for tomorrow so perhaps I'll bump to some of you tomorrow. Thing is I may arrive to take the first bus to CEC. who's with me? PM me. Btw who wants the group photos. PM me too.

Heard there will be a carnival-like atmosphere tomorrow. Better be. At least there's my secondary objective to keep me busy. :P

On the other hand, with CNY just around the corner, numbers ending in 8 (008) means luck, the 'slap on the wrist' notwithstanding :)

evo - February 6, 2010 02:51 PM (GMT)
Singapore, Feb 6 (AP) Australia's air force said today that one of its F-111 jets made an emergency landing earlier this week during an aerial display at the Singapore Air show and will not participate in further performances.

The F-111's aircrew radioed a distress call after receiving an engine fire warning just two minutes into its seven-minute performance Thursday, said Royal Australian Air Force Flight Lieutenant Leon Izatt, who was part of a two-man team piloting the jet.

Its crew immediately terminated the flight and made an emergency landing on one of the plane's two engines.

The air show was likely to have been the last for the jet as Australia's air force plans to retire its F-111 fleet in December.

Even the B-52 flyby on the way back got problem on of tanker problem

NAHA, Japan, Feb. 6 (AP) - (Kyodo)—A B-52 bomber made an unscheduled landing Saturday at the U.S. Kadena Air Base in Okinawa Prefecture because of fuel shortage, base officials said.

The bomber had left Guam and was heading to Singapore to perform at an air show, but it decided to land at the base in the evening because it was unable to receive fuel through aerial refueling as scheduled, the officials said.

They said the bomber will head to Singapore as soon as possible after refueling. There are no explosives loaded on the bomber, they said.

A KC-135 air tanker from Kadena base was supposed to refuel the bomber in the air, but the tanker could not be used because of maintenance problems, according to the officials.

Ok, no crash involve it crashed into a pair of fire engines but it was a write off <instead>. My bad.

QUOTE (B-1B Losses @ Global Security.Org)

On 08 March 2008, an Ellsworth-based B-1 collided with two emergency-response vehicles after landing after reporting an in-flight emergency at Andersen Air Force Base in Guam. The B-1 had turned back to Andersen AFB, Guam, after the crew reported a hydraulic leak. After the crew safely landed the plane and got out, due to concerns about fire, the bomber rolled into a pair of parked fire trucks. The aircraft was returning to Ellsworth after participating in the Singapore Air Show.
