ST Engineering's Marine Arm Secures S$55m Worth of Upgrade and Modification Contracts

(Source: ST Engineering; issued April 1, 2010)

SINGAPORE --- ST Engineering announced today that its marine arm, ST Marine, has been awarded S$55m worth of upgrading and modification contracts from both its Naval and Commercial customers.

The Republic of Singapore Navy (RSN) has awarded a contract to ST Marine to upgrade a class of its vessels. The work scope will involve detailed system design, installation and integration to enhance the capability of the vessels to meet RSN's operational requirements. The upgrading work will commence mid 2010 and is expected to be completed by end 2015.

MCVs? Wasn't it already announced last year by MINDEF?

Anyone knows if UAE and Bahrain had upgraded their Murray Jip class (Lurssen MGB-62) and Al Manama class (Lurssen FPB-62) respectively?

The 18 year-old Missile Corvettes will embark on a Life Extension Programme so that they can continue to contribute effectively for many more years.

Make it less top heavy and add a hanger too. :P

Probably the upgrade could add in a couple of Venus USVs too, transforming the MCVs into "motherships"..

MCMV?

Since the upgrading of MCVs was already announced and the PVs are still relatively young... It can't be the LPDs, unless the RSN want to convert it into a mini-heli carrier!

well, they can optimise the LSTs to become full blown USV motherships, which would be utterly kickass B)

2 of the Bedok class MCMVs are undergoing complete MLU refitting right now, the other 2 will only receive partial refit.

The only logical choice will be the MCVs.

How about upgrading (lengthen) the LST's helipad to increase accommodation from 2 medium size helicopters to 3?? That way, below deck can also accommodate more USVs, FCEP..

Could it be the Challenger Class submarines?

I am not sure if ST Marine have the technology but the truth is the Challengers are pretty old hulls.

I believe the Challenger class is set to retire.

Retire 4 subs for only 2 new subs???

IINM, I remember reading somewhere that the Archer Class Subs are to replace some of the Challenger Class subs..

RSN bought 5 challengers. It could replace the spare which means 4+2 left.

Other than the LSTs, frigates, etc, etc, the full potential of the upgraded MCVs (or whatever vessel that the ST Engg news report is refering to) would be realised by utilising USVs as force multipliers.. I guess that's the way towards lean crewing..

I wonder will we ever see any of these (27m Interceptor & 85m OPV) in RSN's fleet in the future..

The spare sub is meant for cannibalising of spare parts for use to support the other operational ones. RSN may decommission one more to serve such purpose.

Archer represent an increase in RSN sub-surface warfare capability. I think, eventually there will only be 2 Challenger-class subs in operation together with the 2 newer Archer-class subs.

MINDEF, depending on the threat assessment for the foreseeable future, is known to plan way ahead for major weapon acquisition. Who knows, the replacement for Challengers may well be on the way.

Looks like all the PVs had all the mistrals replaced by the typhoon system. The MCMVs also had its bofors 40mm replaced by the typhoon too.
