I wonder how useful these public bomb shelters can be.. The nearest one from my place/office is near, yet so far.. Think in an emergency (while in the open), by the time I find one, the bomb shelter will probably be full or I probably have died for the country..

Can a person be considered *died* for the country while running to hide in the bomb shelter??

i thought we're suppost to report for duty instead of running towards the shelter....if you died while running to the shelter instead of reporting for duty hour's ago arent you still AWOL instead of KIA?

What truth? That they lead to massive underground cities for the entire population to seek shelter in for years when Nibiru makes its pass around Earth in 2011/2012 and ravage the surface of the planet?

My aunt has a minimart in those underground shelters, the ventilation system dose not work there are cracks along the "window hatches" and the "vault door" does not close and lock properly. :P

Civil Defence Emergency Handbook.. Browsing through, it seems quite thorough with peacetime, wartime, terrorism topics, etc in it, especially how to take cover in the open during an air raid / artillery shelling on page 83..

The underground stations (can't recall which 1) have this huge ass Cheyenne Mountain complex blast doors at the end of the stations, pretty cool.

Some photos. The train tracks can be seen, it think it might sufficient power to crush a train car and still maintain an air tight seal. :P

in other countries, such as Taiwan or Malaysia, the parliamentarians will start asking questions, but not in Singapore.

I'm a little puzzled. For the ventilation system, if it is part of the pressurization system it should be a fire safety critical system, which means that prior to commissioning and every subsequent year it should be subject to an inspection by a Registered Inspector, as part of an overall system inspection to ensure that all fire safety critical items are functional. If they are indeed non-functional and have remained so for an extensive period of time, then the system has failed despite multiple safeguards. I do not know if the blast doors are subjected to the same yearly inspections, but I do know that Home Shelters are subjected to at least one inspection prior to TOP certification, so I don't see how the civil defense shelters would be subjected to any less scrutiny. To say that this (presumed) ventilation system failure and poor blast door workmanship would have enjoyed prominence in parliament should there have been an opposition party is fanciful at best - it's like saying that toilet leakages in HDB flats won't happen because the opposition would bring it up and so get the PAP to do something about it. Come on, get real. Blaming PAP for everything only shows something is wrong with us, not the PAP. As far as I can see the PAP has done a good job of creating the agencies responsible for construction and safety oversight. Our building codes and the level of accountability is excellent in comparison to other countries. They have done their job well. If there is any failure in this case, the responsibility will fall on the RI who inspected the shelter and SMRT.

Well, some of these shelters are rather old, 20 to 30 years? Anyway it takes time to mobilise the shelters and clear of whatever junk is in there, enough time to fix whatever that is required to operational status.

Hmm okay i was part of a company that maintained and thus i've been to countless inspections of said shelters.

Since there was no security non-disclosure thingy then i'll just say.
The ventilation system of the HDB shelters are NOT pressurized. They are only filtered.

They have seperate generators to power the lights, ventilation and all that. All can be controlled from the shelter.
The generator is kept in a separate area that cannot be accessed from inside the shelter.Which im assume is for safety sake.
Toliets and Water tanks are in the shelter. As are fire extinguishers.

They are inspected at least once a year by the SCDF.

Now the lights all work, the generator works, and the filters kinda work.
But honestly without at least 24 hrs of prep i doubt they would be ready for use.

Certain corners were cut during maintenance so the shelters barely meet requirements =P
And those requirements aren't all that high hehe
