Title: Singapore's Defence Relation with ROC
tankee1981 - June 26, 2010 08:36 PM (GMT)
I discovered this series of 6 clips on Youtube from a Taiwanese TV programme about Singapore. This programme is apparently recorded some time back.
The 2nd clip mentioned about the early days of Singapore-Taiwan defence relations. Much of the in-depth info from the programme is actually quite new to me thus this will be interesting.
Pls note that the clip is in Chinese only as its a Taiwanese programme.
Viewer Discretion is advised.

I think no need to view, or discount 90%. by 1:30 they are already sprouting rubbish like we went to Malaysia to help with our defense. I will not elaborate on how dumb this statement is.

not entirely wrong, we did join the FPDA in 1971, even though that was actually an evolution from AMDA.
though our govt did manage to tear the JDC to pieces, much to our relieve.
furthermore, its true that our first chief of navy was taiwanese, though i am not sure if our first chief of air force was also taiwanese, but it is indeed true the taiwanese did favour the founding of RSAF which the israelis did held some reservation.
suntec city was indeed built on "fengshui" guidelines.
nontheless there were indeed many misinformation.
the 1 dollar coin with the octogon shape was issued way back before the 1997 financial crisis.
no taiwanese ever held the post of singapore minister of defence.

I am afraid that is another rubbish clip from ROC...claiming both India & Israel turn down Singapore request for help. Only Taiwan is the first to help.

but we do know for certain that the RoCAF supplied the trainers (personnel) and trained our first batch of RSAF guys right ?
remembered reading a thread on this sometime back on milnuts. the squardon/flight leader was taiwanese and even performed in one of our NDP's.

The ROC govt did provide us with critical support in the early years. Let's hope we continue Starlight to lessen their sense of isolation
As they say 飲水思源!

I was referring to his statement at 01:30, nothing to do with FPDA.

we definitely owed a lot to the Taiwanese, make no mistakes, but many statements in the clip are factually wrong, which then cast doubts on other statements which are much less well known, for example that India replied with just "Thank You Very Much" to our request for military training assistance.
my point being, there are plenty of real facts that the Taiwanese helped us, why tarnish it with all the half truths and utter fantasy?
FIVE-TWO - June 27, 2010 07:35 AM (GMT)
another funny take: at the same claim at 01:30 the fella claimed that even Israel had to consider the feeling of Malaysia when extending assistance to us. Come on, why relationship did the Malaysian had with Israel, even today?
I hate people who sprout crap.

This is true. One of my good friend's father was seconded fr ROCAF to teach on the S211 as instructor pilots from 1980- 1990. There were like at least a dozen of these instructors who were seconded according to my friend. He was flying the F-5E and Sabre in ROCAF then.
They were put up mostly in those colonial houses in Seletar airbase with their families.

yes. i think gary1910 knows much more about this. He's the one that has posted it in this link back in 05 (wow, how time flies). detailed account.
http://militarynuts.com/index.php?showtopic=533was in taiwan a couple of years back, heard from the tourguide that the hualien airbase was their principle RoCAF base in the event of a chinese attack (strategy to give the chinese a bloody nose in the air and on the marines/amphibuous units. retreat from coastal areas into inland, mountainous areas/hardened bases and hold out for the americans)
also heard from him we have a detachment of vipers based there. permanently for training. but this has never been disclosed nor officially confirmed. neither is any known RSAF exercise with RoCAF and/or training agreement. He claimed to have recieved and done R&R tours/packages for the RSAF there. given the lack of information and secondary sources that correspond with this information, not sure about how true is this. anyone knows about this

this is really quite surprising to hear. never heard of RSAF actually training in ROC even. Did anyone actually trained with RSAF support during Starlight? probably more than the PRC would be prepared to tolerate.

could it be in the past when we had the A/B model of the F16 ? or we could have exercised or trained on their planes. something low-key without raising anyone else's eyebrows

The ROC air base is prob not Hualian but Ching Chuan Kang in central Taiwan in Taichung. This is the only airbase not near the coast and has massive underground hangers and the biggest airbase in Taiwan. This will be used in the event of retreat and counter attack with PRC. This is also a high value target in PRC and they even built a mock up of the base for PLAAF to practice their attack drills.
