I'll definitely be there!
2011 is also the RAAF's 90th Anniversary.

I'm interested to go if there's a group trip.
Passed by Avalon when going back to Mel.
Viper52 - July 2, 2010 02:03 AM (GMT)
This might be a better show for interested MNs. All military aircraft/warbirds. Previous RAAF airshows had USAF aircraft sprinkled in as well.
http://www.theherald.com.au/news/local/new...ow/1874408.aspx Williamtown is just outside Newcastle NSW, about 2 hours drive from Sydney.

Barring last minute changes, all of Temora Aviation Museum's flyable collection will be at Williamtown. So expect the Canberra, Sabre, A-37, Spitfire VIII and XVI, Mustang (among others) to be there.
A list of their collection can be seen at

Viper52 - September 10, 2010 10:14 AM (GMT)
One week to go to Williamtown. Have received full program of the media event from the RAAF a full week before the event itself. Nice work!

Here's a teaser of whats to come on my site:

RAAF F/A-18F Super Hornet. First appearance at an airshow

RAAF F-111 Dump and Burn. The type will retire in Dec 2010 and this is the last public appearance at an airshow

Mixed formations were the order of the day. This one is of a F-111, Super Hornet, Gloster Meteor and Lockheed Hudson.

Gloster Meteor warbird. Belonging to the Temora Aviation Museum, its the only single-seat Meteor flying in the world.

No RAAF airshow is complete without the PC-9s of the Roulettes. Here Roulette 5 and 6 perform a mirror pass

The Aussie warbird fraternity was out in force. This is a Aussie-built Mustang restored to flying status.

RAAF legacy Hornet releasing flares during a tactical display

I really hit the jackpot with this one. When I pulled into the carpark of Fighter World museum I found they had towed out their ex-RSAF Hunter to make space for their Mirage III to be brought to the showsite. Mai tu liao, snapped pics of it in brilliant light. The museum is fantastic except the lighting is too poor to get good shots of the exhibits.
xtemujin - September 19, 2010 11:36 AM (GMT)
Great catch of the Hornets and the other RAAF aircrafts bro.
Wow, really a great moment to take photos of the RSAF Hawker Hunter. B)
Viper52 - September 23, 2010 01:34 PM (GMT)
Finally managed to get one gallery up. First one is of the statics and taxi shots, here's some highlights:

Lockheed Hudson belonging to the Temora Aviation Museum. The ONLY flying example in the world. The RAAF had 2 sqns of Hudsons based in Malaya and Singapore during the Japanese invasion

RAAF F/A-18A Hornet in 3 Sqn anniversary markings

F-111 special scheme marking its retirement. Not the nicest RAAF special scheme, but it won me a bet with an Aussie who bet that the RAAF won't bother with a special F-111 scheme for the show!

Pilot of restored L-39 Albatross waves to the crowd. You can buy a flight on this plane, will cost you though!

The RAAF's new Boeing 737-based Wedgetail AEW

statics gallery can be viewed here

Triple F111, damn it, I'm in the wrong place right now. :(
No RAAF NH90 thou.
Cheers.

Thanks, the F-111 3-ship was nice, but the guys in the media corner all agreed that it was disappointing they didn't do a formation Dump and Burn in V-formation (there is photographic evidence it had been done before)
Re: MRH-90 no-show; Don't quote me on this, but according to another photog with a contact in the RAAF the reason for the Army no-show is due to there being a disagreement of some sort between Army Aviation and the RAAF.
who - September 27, 2010 01:30 AM (GMT)
yeah the triple ship Pigs are nice as it shows the different wing sweep. like everyone said if they only fly side by side and dump and burn....
Viper52 - September 27, 2010 02:41 AM (GMT)
Just a side note, the Meteor sounds a lot like the Hunter when it flies (the low pitched whine followed by a roar as it flies over), they call it the Blue Note and in the Meteor its caused by airflow over the nose gun ports.
For a kid in the 80s who grew up with the sound of the Hunters flying overhead, it really brought back memories. B)

the hunters used to do a low pass down the runway (ala blue angels) during airshow/open house.

I'm finally confirmed for Avalon, after a few failed attempts due to work schedule over past few years...
I would appreciate if the regulars there can provide answers to the following:
1) I am assuming that there will be flying displays on trade days. Am I correct? Is the flying display of the same duration?
2) Is 100-400 lens good for Avalon? Too close for runway?
3) Assuming that I have to stay a bit longer for at least one of the public day (for Friday), is the Gold Pass worth the money?
Thanks in advance
xtemujin - February 21, 2011 12:34 PM (GMT)
Finally settled my travel arrangement to Melbourne.
See you guys in Avalon, I'll be down during the public days.
Next stop will be LIMA 2011 for the Airbus A400M for me. :P

World's top aircraft descend on Melbourne for Avalon 2011 Christopher Gillett From: Herald Sun February 26, 2011 12:00AM

Picture: Alex Coppel Source: Herald Sun http://www.heraldsun.com.au/ipad/flights-o...c-1226012184188AVALON is getting ready to welcome the world to the 2011 International Airshow.
This year marks the 10th time the show has been staged at Avalon and expectations are high.
Premier Ted Baillieu, who launched the event yesterday, said this year was an aviation milestone - 100 years since the first passenger flight in Australia and the 90th anniversary of the RAAF.
"Aviation has opened doors for Australia - it's the passport to the rest of the world," Mr Baillieu said.
"We have dreams here; we do want Avalon to be an international airport."
Airshow chief executive Ian Honnery said the show would feature the F-22 Raptor.
"The F-22 Raptor boasts stealth technology, speed, agility and long- range capabilities," Mr Honnery said.
Avalon 2011 will be the largest airshow to date, with military, commercial, historic, business, civil and general aviation aircraft.
The six-day event opens on Friday.

Some pics; more to follow over the next few days

Weather was beautiful this morning, turned diabolical a few hours later. Typical Melbourne
xtemujin - March 4, 2011 10:34 AM (GMT)
Cloudy skies and chilly winds greeted us at Avalon today, 040311(Fri).
There are two static USAF F22 guarded by a police car and ADF personnel with a dog.
A good performance from the RAAF F18 crew and good attitude on the ground from the ADF personnels.
Not bad makan option with a Nandos and kebab trailer.
Photos will only be available when I'm back in Singapore next week.
xtemujin - March 5, 2011 08:19 AM (GMT)
Great weather today at Avalon with blue skies and less windy.
A mini Milnuts gathering for the Avalon Airshow 2011.
Have a safe trip back today for some of the Milnuts.
The B1 did fly at the last minute today.
Cheers.
Spotter - March 6, 2011 08:47 AM (GMT)
The B-1B "Lancer" did not perform as part of the flying display for Saturday. It landed at 1710 (from Tulla) , after doing a flypast in clean configuration over the runway.
xtemujin - March 6, 2011 09:32 AM (GMT)
The weather today at Avalon was hot and it felt like I was back in Singapore.
The B1 did perform today and it was parked at the south of the taxiway after that.
I was amazed at how fast the RAR commando did their all round defence after coming down from the Blackhawk.
The ADF personnel were very friendly with the crowd.
All in all, a very laid back airshow with the Australians with their lawn chairs near the fence.

RSAF scores at Avalon Airshow awardsPosted: 07 Mar 2011, 0945 hours (Time is GMT +8 hours)
Report by Chen Wei Li | QUOTE |
The Republic of Singapore Air Force (RSAF) won two of the eight awards up for grabs at the military Concours d'elegance (competition of elegance) of the 2011 Australian International Airshow and Aerospace & Defence Exhibition in Australia (Avalon Airshow), which was held on 5 Mar.
The RSAF took home the Best Overall Mlitary Aircraft for the F-16C Fighting Falcon display and the Best Helicopter award for its Super Puma helicopter display.
Military aircraft at the Avalon Airshow were automatically entered into the competition and the other six categories were the Best Fast Combat Jet Aircraft, Best Large Jet/Special Transport Aircraft, Best Propellor Aircraft, Best Jet Warbird, Best Multi-prop Warbird and Best Single-prop Warbird.
Receiving the awards on behalf of the RSAF at the awards ceremony was Major (MAJ) Desmond Too, detachment commander of the 40-odd RSAF contingent at the airshow.
On receiving the Chief of Air Force Trophy for Best Overall Military Aircraft, MAJ Too said: "It's very significant because it means that all our hard work is being recognised." He added: "It's indeed our honour to represent Singapore and the RSAF at the Avalon Airshow."
The judging panel comprised representatives of the Board of Aviation Development Australia Limited, the Australian Defence Force, the Royal Aeronautical Society (Australian Division) and the Royal Australian Air Force Association. It evaluated the aircraft in various aspects, including the aircraft's overall appearance, the supporting display material exhibited and the presentation of the aircraft and its crew.
It was a tough fight in the Best Helicopter category, according to Lieutenant Colonel (LTC) Chris Tang, Overseas Training Commander of the Oakey Training Centre in Australia, as the Super Pumas were up against the MRH-90 Multi-role helicopters of the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) and the Black Hawks from the United States.
"Our team worked very hard to maintain the aircraft, and winning this award is a recognition and acknowledgement of our hard work and professionalism, not just by the organisers but also by the Australian public whose votes play a part in determining the winner of this category." said LTC Tang.
The competition was first held in 2005 and serves to complement a similar contest held for civil-registered aircraft.
The RSAF's participation in the Avalon Airshow, which was held from 1 to 6 Mar, reflected the close and long-standing ties between the two air forces. The RAAF had participated with its aerobatics team and F-111 aircraft for static and flying displays at the Singapore Airshow in 2008 and 2010, while the RSAF is a regular participant in Exercise Pitch Black, a multilateral air exercise hosted by the RAAF.

Best Overall Military Aircraft Award, they are joking right?
Having seen the flying displays over five days, I still can't believe it!
And I am trying to be as objective as possible...... the Aussies must have got tired of the Hornets.

Viper52,
Great photos bro especially the RAN Fennecs.
I had a blast at the Avalon Airshow 2011 and hopefully I'll be able to make my way down again for 2013.
Anyway, looking forward to the meetup for the RSAF Open House 2011. Hopefully we'll see more stuff. :P
Cheers.
