Title: ISA Detention for 20 year old NSman

Grunt - July 6, 2010 12:26 PM (GMT)
National Serviceman Muhammad Fadil Abdul Hamid, 20, detained under the Internal Security Act (ISA). CJ's blog has details. Read also details of the 'Chilling tale of S’porean wanna-be terrorist'. There are two points to note in the post by CJ:

One, Fadil was an NSF trainee undergoing section leader training in Pasir Laba Camp at the point of his arrest. This means he did well in BMT and was seen to be 'normal' by his BMT instructors and that it was his internet activities that gave him away. Is the detection of his activities related to the "Risk Assessment and Horizon Scanning Programme (RA&HS)" developed by the Singapore Govt (or am I misunderstanding this)? RSIS has some details here too and here's a US press release on it by M·CAM CEO who participated in panel discussion on RA&HS. John Petersen, President, The Arlington Institute, said: "Just identify weak signals and early indicators - I think all you have to is find one significant weak signal... that you otherwise wouldn't have seen... and it's worth what you spend for. We have tried to design it so that it is very obvious and easy to use but like any new piece of technology you have to go through a little bit of training process." For the past 17 years, the Singapore government has been using what is called scenario planning to think about what could possibly happen in the future. In 2007, security planners feel that with a very rapidly changing global environment, scenario planning alone is just not enough. In maritime security, for instance, Singapore has been working with the US Joint Forces to develop a risk assessment system that could piece together information on ownership, cargo, crew and voyage details and also detect the fact that a particular ship had stowaways on board.

Two, of particular interest to me is this quote with regards to a member of the Jemaah Islamiyah (JI), Ibrahim Mohd Noor, who was released on a Suspension Direction (SD) on June 1:

"Ibrahim fled Singapore in December 2001 following the arrests of Singapore JI members in ISD's security operation. He was a trained operative who had conducted terrorist reconnaissance against local establishments in Singapore to prepare for JI's terrorist operations. Ibrahim was arrested and detained under the ISA in Apr 2007 following a joint operation with a regional security agency."

now, as bizarre/dangerous as it might sound, is there a place where I can watch these videos? MAJOR DISCLAIMER: I want to understand the psychological processes used to twist people into doing some of the most heinous things on the planet. I kinda have a theory, but I'd like to see it to know. Just so you guys know, I suspect the psychology behind the recruitment methods are not unlike how cults work. (Psychology textbooks are so exciting these days eh?) And just so you guys know I'm being objective, hence I'm checking out IRA propaganda videos as well.

Oh, and preferably those Al Awlaki should have English subtitles :P

Mods, if you think this post has gone waaaaay out of line, I'm cool if it gets deleted. Just let me know, thanks! :) Maybe Pointer can save me the effort of conducting my own research if they address this matter :)

I believed it is an isolated case. Remeber when the first batch of JI operatives are caught, several were still active NS men and they adopt the SAF mobilisation proccedure when they wanted to executed the terrorism acts.

It is unevitable as almost all Singaporean males need to serve NS so likely if caught will either be a active or NS, SAF, SCDF, SPF guy. Of course they are also those exempted from NS but how many are those only?

Given his target audience and his background, I would believe some if not most of his "sermons" are done in English.

As CJ says, do this at your own risk, the watchers watch certain websites and certain keywords on Google searches.

I know (by a few degrees of separation) someone in Oz who had ASIO knock on his door after he did searches using certain keywords (on a dare with a friend).

In the meantime, heres a (pretty long) NY Times article on Al-Qaeda in Yemen.

For those who were caught, serves them right.. They wanna play with fire, now they are under fire.. For National Serviceman Muhammad Fadil Abdul Hamid, his future is gone, plus not forgetting the inconveniences he had put his family members into..

Let's not let our guard down as there may be other like-minded individuals around us.. As such I think our Muslim friends must play a critical part in being the eyes & ears on the ground..

Country comes first..
