| Why do NSmen have to furnish MINDEF with information of their overseas trips? NSmen have a specific operational role to play in an emergency and so it is crucial for them to remain contactable when they are abroad. Keeping MINDEF informed of their whereabouts will allow the SAF to know exactly how many NSmen are in Singapore and where to reach those who are overseas quickly in an emergency. Who needs to notify for overseas trips? NSmen below the age of 50 for Officers and 40 for Warrant Officers, Specialists and Enlistees who are leaving the country for more than 24 hours but less than 6 months are required to notify MINDEF Notification Centre of their overseas trips. This also includes those who have completed their 13-year cycle and are in the MINDEF Reserve. Upon reaching the age of 50 (for Officers) and 40 (for WOSEs), NSmen are no longer required to make a notification. Those who are disrupted from National Service for overseas trips need not inform MINDEF. What will happen if an NSman goes overseas without informing MINDEF? The penalty for persistent offenders is a fine of up to $2,000 upon conviction and they may also have their Exit Permit privileges restricted. For recalcitrant offenders, MINDEF may even withdraw their privilege of not being required to apply for an Exit Permit when they travel overseas for less than 6 months with their full passport facilities withdrawn. This means that they will have to apply for an Exit Permit every time they go overseas. * NSmen are excused from mobilisation if they are overseas and have documentary proof (eg.passport) to show it. Notification of overseas trip is not a form of documentary proof for exemption from mobilisation. * NSmen who notify MINDEF are not automatically exempted from ICTs or any NS training and activities. They will have to apply for deferment or disruption from their respective NS units if they wish to be deferred or disrupted. Please proceed to Singapore Immigration to apply for a new passport. Similarly, those who have an Exit Permit also need not inform MINDEF. NSmen are required to inform the Notification Centre of their country of destination and a contact telephone or a fax number (can be local or overseas) at which they can be contacted or where information of their overseas whereabouts can be obtained during their absence. How to notify MINDEF for overseas trips? NSmen are able to notify MINDEF via the following means: 1)Via phone through MINDEF's integrated voice response system at: Tel: (65)1800-364 6333 2)Fax: 1800-364 6333 with details of at least: i) Destination of travel ii) Departure and return dates iii) IC number iv) Contact number while overseas 3) Through Internet at MIW Overseas trip notification 4) Email to esc@miw.com.sg 5) Snail mail to : MINDEF eServices Centre 7 Bedok South Road Singapore 469272 6)Using SNAP( SMS Natural-language Application Programme ) For more info :Overseas Notification via SNAP Note:All the above methods, you should be given a 4-digit acknowledgement code which will complete thw whole process.
